Make a splash at Westgate for Swimathon 2013

There is still time to sign up to Swimathon 2013 and make a big splash for charity. Entry closes on Wednesday 24 April. Westgate Leisure Chichester is one of 600 centres in the UK taking part in the Swimathon Weekend from 27-29 April.

You can choose one of the Swimathon sessions at Westgate Leisure Chichester on Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 April. The sessions start at 6pm.

"Why not enter the Swimathon and get fit for spring? Swimming is a great form of exercise and is relaxing for the mind and body," says Councillor Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing, Leisure and Community Services at Chichester District Council.

The event is open to all ages and abilities, and even offers a team 5K or 1.5K. You can choose from a 5K or 2.5K distance to help raise money for Marie Curie Cancer Care. Or if you prefer to cheer on from the sidelines, you can sponsor local people taking part by going to 'sponsor a swimmer' by visiting the Swimathon page.

Kevin McCoy, Westgate Leisure Manager, says: "It's going to be fantastic to see so many people in our community getting in the pool to take on a challenge. People taking part will be having fun, as well as raising money for a great cause."

The Swimathon website has lots of advice and guidance on getting ready for the event.

Olympic swimming legend and Swimathon President, Duncan Goodhew, said: "Following a fantastic Olympic year, it's important that sports such as swimming continue to be in the limelight. Looking to improve on a record breaking Swimathon year in 2012, we'd love to add to the half a million people who have taken part so far, by asking everyone to dive into pools up and down the country. These amazing people have raised over £38 million for charity to date!"

The money raised by taking on the Swimathon distance challenges for Marie Curie Cancer Care will help support Marie Curie nurses to provide free hands-on care for over 31,000 people with terminal illnesses and vital emotional support to their loved ones, at home or in one of the charity's nine hospices.
