'Pay on foot' parking system to be introduced at popular Chichester car park

A new, customer-friendly payment system could soon be launched at the Avenue de Chartres multi-storey car park in Chichester. Chichester District Council's Cabinet has backed the installation of a new 'pay-on-foot' payment system to improve the customer experience and support businesses. A final decision on the installation will be made by Full Council on Tuesday 21 May.

Parking charges would remain the same - the only difference is that customers will pay for the time they have used when they leave the car park, rather than having to buy a ticket when they arrive.

The new payment machines accept credit and debit cards as well as coins and notes, giving customers more ways to pay for their stay without having to rummage around for the right change.

A public consultation is currently underway to find out people's views on car parking in the district. It includes questions about payment methods and ease of use, along with whether to also introduce the 'pay on foot' scheme at other car parks. The Cabinet agreed that if the public is in favour then this will be introduced at more car parks.

The survey will run until Sunday 21 April. It can be found online at For more information, or to get a paper copy of the survey, please contact the Corporate Information Team on 01243 534623 or email

Kenrick Garraway, Assistant Director for the Economy, says: "The introduction of this user-friendly system demonstrates our continued commitment to improving the district's car parks and making them more welcoming and convenient to customers. We know this will be well received by shoppers from the feedback we've already had and will help to support the economic wellbeing of the city centre.
