The search is on for our future sporting stars

Introduction

2012 will be remembered as one of the greatest in British sporting history - and now the search is on for the Chichester District's future sporting stars! Applications have opened for the 2013 Youth Sport Achievement Awards. We are looking for local sports stars, teams, coaches and volunteers.

Nominating someone for an award is easy - just fill out one of the nomination forms with details and send it back to the council. The deadline for entries is Friday 19 April.

The awards ceremony will take place at Westgate Leisure Chichester on Saturday 22 June.

The awards night aims to celebrate sporting excellence throughout the Chichester District, celebrating young sports men and women and the successes they have experienced over the past 12 months.

The scheme recognises not only the outstanding achievements of young sportsmen, women, and teams across the sporting spectrum, but also those coaches and volunteers that work tirelessly 'behind the scenes'...our unsung heroes!

The awards, organised by Chichester District Council in partnership with the Chichester Observer and Chichester Priory Rotary Club, are presented in seven categories:

·       Team of the Year.

·       Volunteer of the Year.

·       Coach of the Year.

·       Young Person's Commitment to Sport.

·       Outstanding Contribution to Sport.

·       Outstanding Sports Performance of the Year.

·       Youth Sport Achievement.

This final award has been broken down into three categories - bronze for a sportsperson who has represented their district, silver for a sportsperson who has represented their county/region and gold for a sportsperson who has represented their country.

Councillor Eileen Lintill, Chichester District Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure, Wellbeing and Community Services, says: "2012 was a great year for British sport history - from Bradley Wiggins winning the Tour de France to Jessica Ennis winning gold at the London 2012 Olympics. On a more local level, the Olympic Torch Relay came through the district and the Natures Way Triathlon and Junior Aquathon, and the Children on the Edge Half Marathon were all great successes. The 2013 Youth Sport Achievement Awards will help us to celebrate the wealth of young sports talent here in the Chichester District. As a council we are determined to develop sporting opportunities for all young people."
