New Year, new you!

Chichester District residents wanting to start the New Year off by becoming healthier are being offered advice on how to stick to their New Year's resolution.

Tips from Chichester District's Wellbeing team include:

1. Make only one resolution. Choosing just one aspect of your health to improve will increase your chance of success.

2. Plan your resolution in advance. This will give you time to think about your goal and how to achieve it.

3. Don't repeat last year's resolution. Or, if you do, at least pick a different technique to achieve it.

4. Keep the resolution specific and write it down.

5. Plan a reward for when you achieve your goal. This will give you something to focus on.

Meanwhile, the Wellbeing team has a range of support for those looking to get healthier:

·       Wellbeing Weight Loss Workshops - these take a detailed look at your eating habits, health and lifestyle and will help you to make small and simple changes. The programme includes a free one-to-one consultation with a Wellbeing Advisor and 12 weekly weight loss workshops. Groups are now available in Selsey at the Children and Family Centre on Mondays from 10am-11.30am, Midhurst at the Children and Family Centre on Tuesdays from 1pm- 2.30pm, Chichester at Westgate Leisure on Mondays from 7.30pm-9pm and Southbourne at Westgate Leisure Bourne on Mondays from 1pm- 2.30pm.

·       Junior Wellbeing - this is a programme for children who may be over their healthy weight and involves the whole family to help everyone become healthier and more confident. The programme is for children aged five to 16 years old and runs for 10 weeks.

·       Stop Smoking drop-ins - the free drop-in sessions are held every Thursday from 5pm-6.30pm at Westgate Leisure in Chichester.

The Wellbeing team is also encouraging people to sign up to Dry January and stay alcohol free for the whole month. For more information on Dry January see

Councillor Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Wellbeing and Community Services at Chichester District Council, says: "Keeping a New Year's resolution can be tough. A promise made hastily when you feel guilty after Christmas, can quickly be forgotten when you return to your normal routine in January. Our Wellbeing team can help you take at a balanced picture of your health and encourage you to make changes, however small, which we believe could make a positive difference to your feelings of health and happiness in the future."
