Shop locally this Christmas and discover all the Chichester District has to offer

Chichester District residents are being encouraged to shop locally this Christmas. The district offers a wide range of shops. Chichester has everything from high street names to independent retailers, while Midhurst, Petworth and Selsey are full of independent shops, stocking a range of products.

If you're out and about in the district, take time to visit the local attractions too. A visit to the shops in Chichester could be combined with a visit to a carol service at Chichester Cathedral, a trip to Pallant House Gallery, or a chance to explore The Novium, the new museum. You could also take a guided City Walk. For tickets or more information contact Chichester Tourist Information Centre on 01243 775888. Or you could take a walk around the historic City Walls.

If you're in Midhurst, you could combine the visit with a winter walk to Cowdray Ruins. In town watch out for a fun 'Find the Stag' competition for the children. Once you have located all the stags hidden around the town, enter the prize draw to win a prize. The competition takes place from Friday 7 December to Saturday 15 December. Late night shopping will also take place Friday 7 December to coincide with the Midhurst Town Council Street Party. There will also be a Santa's grotto in West Street from 6.30pm on the Friday. This will also be available on Saturday 8 and 15 December from 10.30am-3pm. Some shops will also open late on Thursday 13 and 20 December and some shops trading on Sundays in December.

Extra public car parking spaces are now available in Midhurst, just in time for Christmas. Chichester District Council has organised the new spaces so more parking is available while the new Midhurst Community and Leisure Centre is built. The extra spaces are available at:

·       Midhurst Rother College - over 100 spaces are available at weekends, bank and public holidays and during the school holidays between 9am and 5pm. Pay and display machines will operate during these times charging 10p for up to two hours, 20p for up to three hours, 40p for up to 4 hours, 60p for up to five hours, 80p for up to 6 hours, £1 for up to 7 hours and £1.20 for up to 8 hours. The car park will be regularly patrolled by Chichester District Council's Civil Enforcement Officers; and

·       Kavanagh's Budgens - a total of 25 spaces are available seven days a week for Chichester District Council Grange Road car park permit holders to the side of the store in Bepton Road, Midhurst. The car park will be regularly patrolled by Chichester District Council's Civil Enforcement Officers. Parking will continue to remain free for two hours for Budgens' customers.

Petworth is internationally recognised for its antique shops, but it is also a lively and inspiring town with lots of independent shops. Shoppers could take time to visit Petworth House while doing their Christmas shopping.

Meanwhile, head to Selsey for some locally caught seafood as Selsey crab and lobster are at their best this time of year. As well as visiting the town's shops, you could also make time for a walk along the foreshore to East Head.

Other ideas for visits around the district include a stroll in Brandy Hole Copse in Chichester to see the holly and the ivy in its natural state, but please leave it there for the wildlife! Or experience the traditions of Christmas past in Sussex at the Weald and Downland Museum, Singleton, from Wednesday 26 December 2012 to Tuesday 1 January 2013.
