Chichester and District Volunteer Centre

Chichester Volunteer Centre and Pallant House Gallery team up to launch "Volunteering in Action" photography competition On the 1st September 2012, Chichester & District Volunteer Centre and Pallant House Gallery will launch a photography competition called "Volunteering in Action" which aims to celebrate volunteering within the Chichester District.

To mark the end of a fantastic year, which has seen volunteers contributing to events such as the Diamond Jubilee and the London 2012 Olympics, Chichester Volunteer Centre have joined forces with Pallant House Gallery and Chichester District Council to challenge the residents of the Chichester District to capture the spirit of volunteering in a photo. The legacy of the competition will be to create a library of local images which capture this 'spirit', and inspire and engage future volunteers.

Over the past year, in the Chichester District, thousands of hours have been given voluntarily to help people in need, improve the natural environment and to bring the community together. Pallant House Gallery alone has over 300 volunteers who engage in a variety of crucial roles and activities, from room stewarding to providing long-term assistance to individuals with support needs through the exemplary Partners in Art programme.

Chris Broggi, Chichester Volunteer Centre Co-ordinator says: "We will be looking for photographs that inspire and celebrate local volunteering, volunteers and the organisations that involve them. Volunteers make such a huge difference to voluntary and community organisations in the Chichester District and this competition will recognise the hard work and the time that they give so generously. There really is a volunteer role to suit everyone, and we hope that the competition will capture the variety of different volunteering experiences in the district and encourage more people to try volunteering".

Marc Steene, Deputy Director and Head of Learning and Community at Pallant House Gallery says: 'We are delighted to be involved with this project helping to profile the important role that volunteers play in our community. Volunteers are a crucial part of the Gallery's activity and without them we would not be able to open the doors or offer the skilled support needed for participants in our Community Programme.'

The photography competition is open to everyone and is completely free to enter. The competition is split into seven categories and entries can be sent from the 1st September 2012. The competition will close at midnight on Friday 30th November 2012 and the winning photos will be framed and displayed in an exhibition at Pallant House Gallery from 28 January - 10 February 2013. Prizes will be awarded at a prize giving ceremony on 31st January at Pallant House Gallery.
