Get into the Olympic spirit with a free sports taster day

Families are being invited to take part in a free sports taster day and get in to the Olympic spirit on Friday (27 July). The event, organised by Chichester Nursery School Children and Family Centre in conjunction with Chichester District Council, will take place on the same day as the opening ceremony for the Olympics. It will take place at the centre from 11.30am - 1.30pm. Chichester Nursery School, Children and Family Centre is on St James Road, PO19 7AB.

Activities will be available for the whole family, including:

·       football with Brighton and Hove Albion FC;

·       rugby with Chichester RFC;

·       Gym Joey's;

·       Toddlebop;

·       go karts with PACSO;

·       boxercise;

·       health and wellbeing MOT;

·       and much more!

As well as various sports for all the family, the centre's café will be open and a hog roast will be available at a cost of £3. Olympic torchbearer Ant Stewart from Chichester will also be there with his torch, giving the children an opportunity to run with a real Olympic torch.

Visitors can also sign up to the Community Sport and Play Bag scheme. The scheme allows families to hire out a variety of sports equipment for free (after an initial one-off £2 registration fee). It operates like a book library - once you have registered you can look through the book and hire out equipment free of charge for a whole day or the whole weekend.

The equipment available includes:

·       rounders bats;

·       netballs;

·       basketballs;

·       toddler play equipment;

·       rainbow chutes;

·       mini play bats; and,

·       reaction balls.

All pieces of equipment come with guides and ideas for fun games for the whole family.

Becky Edwards, Children's Centre Coordinator at Chichester Nursery School Children and Family Centre, says: "There'll be lots on offer for families with children of all ages and it is a fantastic opportunity for people to see what we offer as a Centre. And the best thing -  all the activities are free!."

Cllr Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Wellbeing, and Community Services at Chichester District Council, says: "With the Olympic torch only recently having travelled through the district, there is a real buzz surrounding the whole Olympics event now. This is a great opportunity for local families to try out some new sports and meet one of our inspirational torchbearers."
