Chichester District's summer of sport starts next week

Introduction

An exciting summer of sport taking place across the Chichester District starts next week (24 July). Part of Chichester District's Big Month, there are events that the whole family can get involved with.


"We have lots of different activities for children, and families, of all ages to take part in this summer from football to walking on water at Westgate, and trampolining to rugby. The Olympics has been inspiring lots of people to get active and try new things. And with the weather hopefully starting to get warmer, we want to encourage people to come along and try something new," says Cllr Eileen Lintill, Cabinet Member for Leisure, Wellbeing, and Community Services at Chichester District Council.

Rugby in the Community courses start on 24 July and will be held at:

·       Bracklesham Bay - Tuesday 24, Wednesday 25 and Thursday 26 July at Bracklesham Park;

·       Easebourne - Monday 20, Tuesday 21 and Wednesday 22 August at Midhurst Rother College Easebourne Site; and

·       Chichester - Tuesday 28, Wednesday 29 and Thursday 30 August at Florence Park.

The courses, which run from 10am - 3pm, are being delivered in partnership with Chichester RFC and Driving Force Rugby Coaching Ltd.

Football in the Community courses also run from 10am - 3pm and start on 26 July at:

·       Chichester - Thursday 26 and Friday 27 July and Tuesday 28 and Wednesday 29 August at University of Chichester, Bishop Otter Campus;

·       Selsey - Thursday 2 and Friday 3 August at The Academy Selsey;

·       Easebourne - Thursday 9 and Friday 10 August at Midhurst Rother College Easebourne Site;

·       Tangmere - Thursday 16 August at Tangmere Recreation Ground;

·       Bracklesham Bay - Friday 17 August at Bracklesham Park; and

·       Fernhurst - Thursday 23 and Friday 24 August at Fernhurst Recreation Ground.

Both the Rugby and Football in the Community courses are open to boys and girls aged 6-15 years of all abilities. Through many different training drills, skills, games and tournaments, they focus on all round player development, individual and unit skills, and most importantly, on having fun! 

Sport and Play pop ups are popping up across the district! Sport and Play Pop Ups are opportunities to take part in free activities in your community space, such as water play, craft activities, frisbee, cricket, football, bubble cups and more. This summer sessions are taking place on

·       Monday 30 July at Graylingwell Park;

·       Tuesday 31 July at Manor Park, Selsey;

·       Wednesday 15 August at Tangmere Recreation Ground;

·       Thursday 16 August at Bracklesham Park; and

·       Monday 20 August at Florence Park, Chichester.

There are also lots of activities taking place at Westgate Leisure. Burst holiday club offers sporting activities with the chance to create and play. It is for ages 5-12 years and runs from 8.30am-5.30pm each day of the holidays. For more information or to book your space, please contact Westgate Leisure Chichester.

Westgate is also offering a variety of classes and activities during the holidays. Please call the centre for times and prices.

Other holiday activities include:

·       Trampolining - drop in classes for mixed abilities and ages, on Mondays. For children aged 5+;

·       Mini Tramps - trampolining for children aged 3-5 on Mondays;

·       Flip 'n' Fun - the 'Flip 'n' Fun' programme, held on Thursdays, is a safe, simple and structured programme from the pool edge for children aged 5-11;

·       Aquaventure - splash, jump and bounce all over Westgate's very own gigantic aqua inflatable! For children aged 8-13. On Tuesdays from 9.45-10.30am and Thursdays from 1.45-2.30pm;

·       Waterwalkerz - for children aged 5+. On Wednesdays from 4.30-6pm;

·       Fencing - for children aged 6+. On Fridays from 1.30-2.30pm;

·       Pre-school gymnastics - each session includes techniques such as climbing, balancing and rolling. For children aged 2+. On Wednesdays from 1-1.45pm;

·       Gymnastics - for children aged 5+. On Wednesdays from 2-2.45pm;

·       Wet fun and games - an hour of non-stop splashing games using a selection of aqua equipment and play games designed for the water. For children aged 8+. On Tuesdays. Children must be water confident and be able to swim 100m to take part; and,

·       Snorkelling - using masks, fins, snorkels and flippers with instruction by a professional and qualified instructor. For children aged 8+. On Tuesdays. Children must be water confident and be able to swim 100m to take part.

There will also be rackets sports for £1 at Westgate Leisure Bourne, Monday-Friday at selected times.
