Chichester cyclists burn off the calorie equivalent of 55,000 Jelly Babies!

Introduction

Hundreds of people around the district have swapped four wheels for two in this year's Chichester Cycle Challenge. The final results are currently being compiled, however figures already show that almost 700 people took part, including staff from just under 40 different organisations. Among those who took part were nurses, architects, teachers, bus company staff and workers from Goodwood and Rolls Royce.

Together they burned off the equivalent of 55,000 Jelly Babies in calories and cycled enough miles to travel to London 500 times!

In total, participants clocked up 36,831 miles. One in six - 16% - of people who took part had not ridden a bike in the past year.

Workplaces competed to see who could get the most staff cycling between 14 May and 5 June.

Challenge co-ordinator Alister Linton-Crook says: "This is the third year we have run the challenge. Our aim is to get more people around the Chichester District to try and enjoy cycling."

Councillor John Connor, Chichester District Council's Cabinet Member for Environment, said: "Well done to everyone who took part. By swapping a car for a bike you are playing your part in cutting vehicle emissions in our beautiful district. I hope that the Cycle Challenge  inspires others to get on two wheels."

The challenge is a partnership between:

·       Chichester District Council;

·       Department of Health South East;

·       NHS West Sussex;

·       West Sussex County Council;

·       Active Sussex; and,

·       CTC Challenge For Change.

The cycling events continue with organised events and rides during national Bike Week, from Saturday 16 to Sunday 24 June. Bike Week is the UK's largest mass-participation cycling event with activities happening up and down the country.

Activities include:

1. a one stop shop for cyclists on Friday 22 June from 7.30am to 10am at The Cross, Chichester, including free bike doctor check-ups;

2. Pedal to Prayers events throughout the summer;

3. guided bike ride from Chichester to Bosham on Saturday 23 June. Meet at 3pm at Westgate Leisure Chichester; and

4. 'Bling Your Bike' competition for local schools.
