Cyclists urged to brighten up as clocks go back

Introduction

Cyclists are being encouraged to 'Be Safe and Be Seen' in preparation for the clocks going back later this month (Sunday 30 October). As the nights draw in, cyclists are reminded to make sure they have lights and wear reflective and fluorescent clothing on their journey to and from school and work.

As the nights draw in, cyclists are reminded to make sure they have lights and wear reflective and fluorescent clothing on their journey to and from school and work.

Two events will be held in Chichester to raise awareness:

  • Tuesday 18 October from 3pm to 6pm at College Fields; and
  • Thursday 27 October from 3pm to 6pm at the Market Cross.

At each event there will be information and demonstrations on:

  • cycle lighting options;
  • cycling helmets;
  • wearing reflective gear;
  • bike security marking;
  • 'Bikeability' rider training; and
  • maintenance courses.
  • Cycling goodies, including high visibility wristbands, will also be given out to help people cycle more safely this winter.

In addition, a guided family ride along the Salterns Way will be held during half term on Wednesday 26 October. There is a choice of a 15-mile route, starting from Westgate Leisure Chichester to West Itchenor, or a shorter route of seven miles that's perfect for families. Upon return you can buy food and refreshments at Café Ravenna at Westgate Leisure Chichester. Tickets cost £2.50 (over eight-year-olds) or £7 for a family ticket (two adults, and up to four children).

Councillor John Connor, Cabinet Member for Environment and Community Safety at Chichester District Council, says: "We want to make sure that cyclists in the district do what they can to remain safe on the roads. By holding these two events we hope to raise awareness. It's also important that they know they must, by law, have a white front light, a red back light and a red reflector at the back."
