Residents warned of Scam

Chichester District residents are being reminded to stay vigilant as bogus callers continue to operate in the South. There are two particular scams the council has been made aware of. In one scam, callers claim to be working for the council and identify that the household may be in the wrong council tax band. They say they can negotiate a refund, but need personal and bank details to collect an admin fee and deposit the refund when it is received.

Another scam has callers claiming to be from Chichester District Council asking about residents' homes energy efficiency. This includes loft insulation, double glazing and renewing your boiler. Again the callers ask for personal and bank details.

The council would like to remind residents that they do not cold call and are now urging everyone to be vigilant and end any suspect phone call immediately. Any genuine direct phone number given by Chichester District Council would be in the format of 01243 534***. Suspicious phone calls, text messages or emails should be reported to the Council on 01243 785166 or Consumer Direct on 08454 040506 (a 24 hour phoneline).

Councillor John Cherry, Portfolio Holder for Resources at Chichester District Council, says: "These are particularly nasty scams that continue to operate despite council and Police warnings. No council would cold call homeowners and ask for their bank details. I would urge everyone to remain vigilant and keep an eye on older relatives or neighbours who may be more vulnerable to such scams."
